Plans to regenerate the area around Wigan Pier to create a ‘Canal Quarter’ on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal have taken a step forward with agreement of a ten-year masterplan by developers and Wigan Council.
The inland town’s famous ‘Pier’ – actually a former colliery railway landing stage – will be the centrepiece of a scheme involving new moorings and boater facilities, towpath improvements, shops, new homes, and a 1200-seat performance venue. The building which used to house a museum called ‘The way we were’ could also be put back into use.
The plans, by H2O Urban in partnership with the Canal & River Trust, will be developed this year with a view to work starting shortly afterwards.
