The city of Bath is famous for its Georgian architecture and its Roman remains – but until now, it’s been less well known for the important industrial heritage largely surrounding the Kennet & Avon Canal.
But now, thanks to a waterside heritage trail that has been launched, that ‘secret’ industrial history including locks, tunnels, aqueducts and pumping stations, is being brought to life. The trail, available as a free booklet at various points along the canal, will reveal the now largely forgotten commercial route that helped Bath’s industrial development.
“Walking down the canal you get a real sense of history,” said Canal & River Trust heritage advisor David Viner. “On this trail you’ve got the added bonus of going through some wonderful countryside in between aqueducts and pumping stations that were the cutting edge of technology in their day,” he added.
