The Canal & River Trust has launched its ‘prospectus for London’, highlighting what it sees as the ways that its waterways in the capital can contribute to “good growth, prosperity and wellbeing”.
These include:
– “Grand Union Canal Quietway”, the development of the towpath in West London as a walking and cycling route, based on a study which suggests that more than half of commuters using the River Lee towpath would have driven or taken public transport if the waterside route had not been available.
– Using waterways for heating, cooling, drainage and building materials transport for new developments.
– Eco-mooring zones with charging points as a contribution to cleaner air
– More use of towpaths for routing electronic communication networks
– Barges for transporting domestic waste for electricity generation, and construction materials for Crossrail 2 if approved.
– Habitat enhancement for wildlife on the River Lee
– Development of long-term moorings in quieter areas
