Help for Heroes and the The Canal & River Trust have just launched their Heritage Heroes scheme to benefit veterans through a programme of canal restoration.
The first phase of the project, made possible by a £500,000 grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery, has just begun in partnership with the Cotswold Canals Trust and was launched by CRT Chief Executive Richard Parry, together with Giles Woodhouse, Head of Recovery South for Help for Heroes.
The veterans will restore some 500 metres of canal bank and towpath at Ryeford, Stroud, to tackle erosion by the River Frome of the narrow causeway that separates the river from the canal. As well as helping to renew their lives as they help transform the waterways, the project will provide the volunteers with an accredited qualification.
Other restorations to benefit from the scheme will be the Pocklington, Wilts & Berks and Kennet & Avon canals
