A new Head of Boating has been appointed to take charge of the Canal & River Trust’s review of boat licensing – but only as a temporary appointment until the review is complete.
After the existing Head of Boating Mike Grimes put in his notice earlier this year, the Trust began recruiting but was unable to find a successor before his departure. So to cover this critical period as the Trust embarks on the biggest licensing shake-up for two decades, Jon Horsfall, North East Waterway Manger, has been drafted in on an interim basis. At the same time he will keep his North East role, but with more of the management will be taken on by his colleagues Tom Wright and Mike Marshall during the secondment.
Mr Horsfall arrived as the first stage of the review (initial consultation of user groups) was being completed. This will be followed by a second stage involving workshop meetingss with boaters around the system, and a third stage of wider consultation. He will remain in post until this is completed in the autumn.
