A grant for almost £700,000 from the National Lottery means that plans for a canal heritage centre on the outskirts of Nottingham can go ahead.
The row of four 18th century former waterways workers cottages by Beeston Lock, where the Beeston Cut meets the River Trent on the south west side the city, will be rescued from dereliction and converted into the Canalside Heritage Centre. The building will be restored to its original style and will house a canal museum and educational centre, arts and crafts foyer and community café supplied by a kitchen garden.
Stewart Craven, a local residential boater who chairs the Canalside Heritage Centre group and has been leading the project from the start, described the Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £687,200 grant as “fantastic news” as well as praising the “overwhelming” support from the local community which has helped raise the remainder of the £865,500 total cost.
