Two and a quarter years since it was launched, the Canal & River Trust is making the first major changes to the way that it’s governed.
The Trust’s overall governing body, the 35-strong Council, is being increased in size towards a target of 40, and taking steps towards having a higher proportion of its members elected. A new member will be elected representing members of the Friends of the Canal & River Trust; a member representing volunteering (currently appointed by Waterway Recovery Group) will be elected from CRT’s registered volunteers (such at volunteer lock keepers, pictured); and the Inland Waterways Association will nominate one member.
At the same time, two new Trustees (who CRT’s directors report to) have been appointed to replace those that have stood down. The new appointments are Ben Gordon, trained as a civil engineer but most recently employed as Chief Executive of Mothercare; and Allan Leighton who has been Chief Executive of Asda and Chaired the Royal Mail – and a keen towpath runner.
