The Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Rishton, Lancashire, has been hit by an emergency closure after a length of towpath collapsed.

Canal & River Trust’s engineers are investigating the problem, which they believed had been caused by leakage through a culvert. Temporary dams have been installed, the affected length of canal has been drained, and the towpath closed. Winding is available to the east of the stoppage near Bridge 109 and to the west between bridges 105a and 106.

It is not known how long the repairs will take, but CRT has warned that “the duration of the works may be substantial”, and that it would take several weeks just for in-depth investigation and planning a programme of repair. An update is promised on 10 October.
