Waterways supporters in the Manchester area are preparing for Operation Starburst, a major volunteer canal cleanup planned for five sites across the city’s waterways.
Volunteers will be spending the weekend of 19-20 October working at Hyde, Ashton, Stalybridge, Failsworth and Newton Heath, clearing rubbish from the Huddersfield, Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest canals. The event, organised jointly by the Canal & River Trust and the Manchester Branch of The Inland Waterways Association, follows on from the success of last autumn’s cleanup around Dukinfield, which in turn marked the 40th anniversary of Ashtac, the 1972 volunteer ‘Big Dig’ which launched the final push to reopen the Cheshire Ring.
