CALDON CANAL

The western end of the Caldon Canal is in the heart of the industrial Potteries, while the eastern end is in finest rural Staffordshire. As it leaves the Stoke on Trent conurbation, old canalside industries are being rapidly replaced by modern developments – but the eastern part follows the Churnet Valley, deep in the Staffordshire moorlands and mostly inaccessible by road. A branch of the canal leads to the market town of Leek, and at the unusual Hazelhurst Aqueduct the Leek branch crosses over the Froghall line.17 miles 18 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 7ft
