GRAND UNION CANAL (LEICESTER SECTION)
The Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal leaves the main line at Norton Junction, and runs through many miles of remote countryside – as well as three long tunnels – before meeting the River Soar in Leicester. At Foxton, a flight of ten locks was once the site of the ill-fated Inclined Plane – a boat-lift built as part of a scheme to widen the canal for larger boats, but unsuccessful for several reasons including the cost of keeping steam up in its boilers. Now the whole Foxton area is being developed as a tourist attraction and the lift may one day be rebuilt.40 miles 41 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 13ft (Leicester to Foxton and Market Harborough), 7ft (Foxton to Norton)
