Huddersfield Broad Canal

HUDDERSFIELD BROAD CANAL

A short broad canal linking the Calder & Hebble Navigation to Huddersfield, this waterway is also known as Sir John Ramsden’s Canal. It outlived the neighbouring Huddersfield Narrow Canal and survived as a little-used dead-end sought out by the occasional waterways enthusiast. But since 2001, the reopening of the Narrow Canal has seen the Broad restored to its earlier position as part of a through route across the Pennines. The main features of its four miles are the nine locks and an unusual vertical liftbridge.4 miles 9 locksMaximum dimensions: length 57ft 6in, beam 14ft 2in
