As London’s oldest canal marks its 250th anniversary, 19 local organisations have grouped together to give the waterway some much-needed TLC
A two-mile Limehouse Cut running between the Limehouse Basin and the Lea River at Bromley-by-Bow has been ‘adopted’ by 19 east London organisations.
The groups, led by housing provider Poplar HARCA, will be responsible for maintaining towpaths, improving wildlife habitats and promoting the wellbeing of the canal through events.
Babu Bhattacherjee, Director of Communities and Neighbourhoods at Poplar HARCA, said: “We will have tremendous volunteering opportunities for local residents.
“We are working to develop paddle sports on the canal and already have linkages so young people can progress their sport to the highest level.”
It is the largest of more than 100 adoption schemes arranged with the Canal & River Trust.
