The work is part of essential maintenance planned across the country, with the CRT spending more than £45 million this winter
Repairs to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal will focus on the waterway at lock 22 in Uppermill, locks 16 and 14 in Mossley and lock 8 in Stalybridge.
Sections will have to be drained and hundreds of fish moved in order for old lock gates to be lifted out and replaced.
David Baldacchino, waterway manager at the CRT, said: “It’s painstaking, specialised work but the canal is an important part of the region’s heritage so it’s right that we devote time and craftsmanship to help continue its restoration and protect it for future generations.”
The CRT plans to replace 164 gates across the country this winter, as well as repair aqueducts, reservoirs and tunnels.
