Hot on the heels of the news that collapsed culverts carrying streams under the canal have closed the Shroppie comes the news that another collapse has hit the Rochdale – and it might be shut for another two months.
Back in November the Canal & River Trust closed the Rochdale Canal at Mytholmroyd so that engineers could investigate the cause of water leaking from the canal. They now believe that the cause was once again a problem with a stream culvert – although their efforts to determine its exact state have been hampered by the heavy flow of water through the culvert and the difficulty of getting their machinery to the site from the nearest road.
They are now concerned that the culvert may have collapsed – in which case boaters are looking at a closure until February, and CRT faces a £100,000 repair bill.
Meanwhile the work to rebuild the collapsed culvert at Stoak on the northern Shropshire Union has been extended to cover a second culvert nearby which has also been found to be in need of repairs – but CRT is still optimistic of reopening it just in time for Christmas.
