Peak Forest Canal

PEAK FOREST CANAL

A canal of two distinct parts, the Lower Peak Forest forms a link in the Cheshire Ring as it passes through the outskirts of Manchester while the Upper Peak Forest is a dead-end that follows the Goyt Valley into the Peak District. Linking the two together are the Marple Locks and spectacular 90ft high aqueduct. Near the southern end of the canal, the route splits into two – one ends in Whaley Bridge while the other arm leads to the restored Bugsworth Basin, a huge restored complex of basins and arms that once formed a transhipment point for limestone and now provides excellent visitor moorings.14 miles 16 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 7ft
