You won’t often see boats south of Welshpool on the Montgomery Canal – but this year there’s a rare chance to not only see one but ride on it.
Over 12 miles of the Welsh length of the canal from Ardleen through Welshpool to Refail have been rescued from dereliction and restored to use – but until the disused section linking it to the English part of the canal is put back into working order, boats from the main network can’t get there. To try to raise the profile of the isolated section and get more support for reconnecting it to the rest of the canal system, there’s a whole series of events planned for this year under the banner ‘Making Waves 2015’.
As part of this programme, the Heulwen Trust’s disabled access trip boat is making a series of special public trips from Welshpool south to Brithdir Lock – and our picture shows the first of these trips, at Easter. As well as more boat trips, Making Waves will include:

. The Montgomery Canal Triathlon on 9 May
. A boating exhibition at Welshpool’s Powysland Museum
. Canoeing, coracle activities, walks and film shows
